POST-SECONDARY TESTING ACCOMMODATIONS

 Students with disabilities often face resistance in getting the accommodations they need to “level the playing field” for high-stakes testing such as SATs and graduate school entrance exams.   The agencies that give those tests often require much more than proof that similar accommodations have been given in high school or college.  Students entering college or graduate school and seeking accommodations will be required to prove that they continue to have a disability that substantially limits a major life activity, such as learning, reading, writing, thinking, or speaking.  In high-stakes testing, they will be required to establish exactly why the effect of their disability requires a particular accommodation or set of accommodations.  Often, the time between the denial of a requested accommodation and the date of the test administration is very short, and the list of things to do to appeal the decision very long.
