Other Disabilities
IDEA provides a final “catch-all” provision to include students with non-enumerated disabilities that adversely affect their educational performance. This provision covers children with multiple (or concomitant) disabilities and other health impairments. Other health impairment means having limited strength, vitality, or alertness, including a heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, that results in limited alertness with respect to the educational environment.
Some examples of other disabilities covered under the IDEA include:
- Asthma
- ADD/ADHD
- Diabetes
- Epilepsy
- Heart condition
- Hemophilia
- Lead poisoning
- Leukemia
- Nephritis
- Rheumatic fever
- Sickle cell anemia
- Tourette syndrome.
